Car lifts are dangerous machinery certified by the European Union. The instructions for CE certification of car lifts are: Machinery Directive 98/37/ECM achinery Directive Low Voltage Directive 73/23/EEC Low voltage Equipment Directive. In the EU Machinery Directive 98/37/EC-Machinerysafety Annex IV, Vehiclelifts are the fifteenth class of dangerous machinery.
The specific standard on which the certification is based is EN1493:1999. This standard was approved for implementation on July 10, 1998 by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN-the European Committee for Standardization). The standard EN1493 has a total of 55 pages detailing the design of the car lift, the mechanical and electrical and hydraulic system safety requirements, and the structural stress calculation requirements.
Common car lifts are available in two-column, four-column, and scissor styles, which can be combined with application series certification to reduce the cost of duplicate applications. Each series is required to prepare a prototype in accordance with EU standards for the type approval of engineers authorized by the European Union.
