KC certification for lithium batteries
Korea KC mark regulation products include rechargeable lithium batteries
Korea KATS (Korean Agency for Technology and Standards) announced the standards applicable to portable secondary lithium battery packs and lithium cells: Self-Regulatory Safety Confirmation, Annex 05, and the inclusion of relevant products under the self-declared Product category of the KC certification System, came into effect on 1 July 2009.
Self-Regulatory Safety Confirmation, Annex 05 covers Battery packs and Battery cells and requires tests similar to the IEC 62133 standard, including: High Temperature Storage Test, Temperature Cycling Test, External Short Circuit Test, and battery cell Crushing test of Cells), Cell Protection Against a High Charging Rate, and Thermal Abuse Test.
At present, the testing of portable secondary lithium battery packs and lithium cells must be carried out by authorized laboratories in Korea and cannot be transferred to IEC 62133 CB report. Once a product has passed the assessment, a Confirmation Letter of Declaration of conformity will be issued for a period of five years, during which no factory inspection is required.
Since January 1, 2009, MKE (Ministry of Knowledge Economy) has unified 13 existing certification marks in South Korea, such as eK, KCC, KPS, etc. into the KC mark, as the country's national certification mark. The transitional period for the new and old logos is 30 June 2011.
Applicable standards
- Single battery (Cell) : portable, energy density per volume more than 400Wh/L
- Battery (Pack): Single battery straight side by side manufacturing
- Portable lithium batteries with navigation function or batteries independent of energy density per volume are suitable for use. (Used in harsh conditions inside the car)
- Single batteries and batteries for products such as portable medical devices, bar codes and credit card readers are applicable.

※ Non-certified object: vehicle drive, industrial, medical or button-shaped.
