Fire-proof materials for construction
Background on European testing methods
At present in the European Union, there are a large number of different tests used to evaluate the fire and fire resistance of building products. The use of different test and evaluation methods means that it is impossible to convert and compare the performance of a fireproof material. In addition, these test methods relate to the regulatory requirements of the countries concerned, so it is not easy to form pan-European changes.
Building Products Directive (CPD)
For the European market, the practical operation of the Construction Products Directive heralds a significant change in the placement of construction products. Under the Building Products Directive, products must comply with the relevant European technical specifications, which in turn produce European test standards for measuring fire resistance and other properties. Products that meet the requirements and are proven to be compliant are allowed to bear the CE label and be sold on the European market.
New European standard for Fire Test
The newly developed New European Standards for Defence Testing (EN Series) have been adopted, in addition to the UK standard, this new standard applies to other countries in the EU. For example, BS ENISO 1182 would be of equal technical and public importance to DIN EN1182 and NF EN1182.
Fire Resistance test
A fire test is a test of the reaction of a part of a building under heating or pressure conditions when exposed to tinder. Fire resistance is a characteristic of composite construction, which is a structural rather than an individual material test, and therefore, tends to be large and complex. Test samples are taken from doors, walls, floors, beams, columns, ceilings, etc. to be used in the following building products. Generally, building products used in general buildings and transportation systems need to be tested for fire.
European Standard for Fire testing of Building Products:
EN 13501-1 - Classification of combustion classes of building products (based on the following test data)
EN ISO 11925-2 - Susceptibility of building products to direct flame - Single flame test
EN 13823- Analysis of the heat exposure of building materials (excluding floor materials) by monomer combustion
EN ISO 9239-1 - Expansion of horizontal flame in ground systems.
EN ISO 1716 - Determination of combustion heat energy
EN ISO 1182 - Testing for non-combustible substances
