Compact fluorescent lamps (CFL) are energy-efficient products that require only 75% of the power of incandescent bulbs and last 10 times as long. In order to improve the safety of CFL lamps and address consumer safety concerns, CSA International has issued the standard C22.2 No.1993-09/UL 1993 3rd Edition /NMX-J-578/1-ANC&mdash. — Adaptors for self-ballasted lamps and luminaires.
This self-ballast luminaire and luminaire adapter standard meets the safety requirements of Canada, the United States and Mexico, and is applicable in all three countries. It is the first edition of NMX-J-578/1-ANCE, the first edition of CSA C22.2 No. 1993, and the third edition of UL 1993.
The new edition of the Tri-Nation standard will replace the previous edition of the UL 1993 standard, which was published in 2006. It will also replace the T.I.L No. B-36B self-ballast fluorescent lamp, the integrated ballast adapter standard, and the T.I.L No. B-69 LED and ultra low voltage incandescent lamp standards. The T.I.L standard will remain valid until February 28, 2012. After this date, the T.I.L standard will be withdrawn.
This standard also covers self-ballasted lamps and lamp adapters with rated voltages between 120V and 347V for use in dry, wet or wet environments. This standard covers different lighting technologies, including but not limited to incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, high intensity gas discharge lamps, LED and halogen lamps. The end-of-life testing requirements for compact fluorescent lamps and lamp adapters have been updated based on the IEC 61347-2-3 standard and added to this standard. The affected product models are as follows:
. 3321 02, LAMPS – Fluorescent self-ballast lamp and combined ballast adapter;
. 3321 82, LAMPS – Fluorescent self-ballast lamp and combined ballast adapter – Certification according to American standards;
. 3321 03, LAMPS – Adapters and self-ballasting adapters – Eternal connection;
. 3321 83, LAMPS – Fluorescent lamp Lamp adapter, self-ballasted – Connected forever. Certification according to American standards;
. 3321 04, LAMPS – LED– For electrical safety only;
. 3321 84, LAMPS – LED– Certified according to American standards. For electrical safety only.
ANSI/UL 1993, a new version of the ANCE, CSA and UL standards, is mainly for self-ballast lamps and luminaire adapters, and its main revisions include the following:
(1) Expands the scope of application of the standard to include some products that previously wanted to be included in the standard
(2) Added reference list
(3) Added and modified the definition of the term
(4) New content with general requirements such as basic assumptions and conventions has been added
(5) Reformulated the shell requirements
(6) Modified and developed polymer material requirements, including changes in flammability requirements from V-1 to V-0

(27) The identification section has been modified to clarify the requirements
(28) Other minor changes, such as reformulating the relevant requirements of the standard, revising references and editing notes.
In addition, manufacturers should also be aware that equipment covered by this standard will need to comply with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70 and Part I of the Electrical Code of Canada, as well as Instalaciones Elé ctricas (utilizació n) and NOM-001-SEDE. Moreover, this standard does not apply to medium base accessories covered by other standards that integrate control devices such as photocells, dynamic detection, wireless control, or dimmers.
In response to this revision, CSA International's customer service staff will inform the relevant companies about the relevant parts of their certification reports that are affected by this revision. If a company's certificates and reports need to be updated, it may need to be tested again according to the relevant terms.
At the same time, enterprises need to receive “ Application for CSA Certification Services” And “ Quotation” Reply within 30 days. In order to ensure that the company's certification report is updated by February 28, 2012, it is important to reply to CSA International by February 28, 2011. If additional testing is required, CSA International will notify the relevant company to send another sample.
For lamp manufacturers, they can apply for CSA International to certify their CFL and other similar lamps according to the new standard, ensuring that their products exported to North America comply with the relevant safety specifications
